The founder of Din Tai Fung is Bingyi Yang, born in 1927 in Shanxi province, China. In the summer of 1948, at the age of 21, Bingyi Yang decided to abandon the KMT-CCP civil war in China. He boarded the Hualien ferry and tried his luck in Taiwan with the help of an uncle there. With the help of his uncle & aunt's family, Yang got his first job in Taiwan as an intermediate cooker Heng Tai Fung. Thanks to his honesty and hard work, after two years, the owner appointed himself responsible for bookkeeping and store inventory. At the age of 28, Yan married Penmei Lai who also worked at Heng Tai Fung. He worked there 3 to 4 years after marriage and then Yang became investor for Hen Tai Fung failed. Because of that failure Being burdened with investment debt, Yang and his wife decided to start their own business. Initially, they were hesitant to start what business. However, after careful thought, Yang decided to name his business Din Tai Fung. This was taken from the initial name of the cooking oil he bought wholesale, Din Mei Oils and the last two names of his first company, Heng Tai Fung, as a token of gratitude. Din Tai Fung was born in 1958. Given the difficulty of finding a phone number at the time, the first phone number listed in Din Tai Fung is still in use today, 23218927. This number was purchased from a financial commissioner who happened to be from the same hometown, Shanxi. When he bought the phone number, he asked Youren Yu, the name of the commissioner, to write the store nameplate, Din Tai Fung Cooking Oil Store.
With the reputation and connections that he netted while working at Heng Tai Fung, Din Tai Fung was quickly recognized in the market. With the benefit of their efforts, Yang and his wife were able to raise money to buy the front store on Xinyi Street. They moved their cooking oil business there and until now it has become Din Tai Fung's main restaurant. When canned cooking oil went on sale in the 1980s, the pattern of consumers buying cooking oil changed resulting in falling business and making Yang and wife think this was the end of their business. However, at that time, just came a new opportunity. Following the advice of Mr. Tang, the owner of restoring Fushing Garden, Yang and his wife turned half their shop into a place to manufacture and sell steamed dumplings.
Thanks to the quality awake, Din Tai Fung steamed dumplings also got the hearts of the customers. Although never advertised, only armed with word of mouth promotion, their business skyrocketed. Din Tai Fung soon stopped selling cooking oil and turned into a restaurant. From here develops the legend of how Din Tai Fung became an international restaurant brand started.
